In the early 1900’s, German immigrants came to Louisville and acknowledged a need for a place to care for their elders. After much discussion, in 1905, they purchased a home with acreage located in the Louisville Highlands. This had been the summer home of the Stewart family, owners of Stewart’s Department Store in downtown Louisville and New York City. Today, the original Stewart home remains a historic part of The Altenheim. The building has modern additions, stylish living spaces and apartments, while preserving the original Stewart mansion, seen from Barret Ave.
